First Day of Speech Therapy!

Today Garrett started his first session of Speech Therapy with the Paletometer.  Much to my relief he loved it!  We've been prepping him for having something in his mouth, worried that he'd be upset about holding something in his mouth for 30 minutes.  He's been playing a lot of Nintendo lately, so we told him it's like a controller for his mouth and he gets to play Nintendo with his tongue.  It worked perfectly, as he played games with it in his mouth trying to catch the dot on the screen with his tongue.  He was sad when we had to leave, but cheered up when I told him we'd be coming back a lot to play with it.

Even more exciting to me is that he actually made improvement just from his first session!  The Speech Therapist worked on G's with him today, since he hasn't been able to say them.  He has been pronouncing them as D's and many people think his name is Derek because of it!  Well, at the end of the appointment he was saying his G's beautifully!  He now says, "Gawett".  :)

You can't see it, but this blue piece is attached to a retainer in his mouth on one end, and a cord connecting it to the computer on the other end.

On the left is a blank screen that the Speech Therapist uses occasionally to show him how something should look , and on the right is Garrett's mouth.  In this shot only a little bit of the dots in the back are lit up, indicating he was just finishing making the G sound at the back of his mouth with his tongue.

And in this shot there are more dots lit up, as he was in mid sentence, probably saying an N sound, based on which dots are lit up.
