SICK WEEK

This was just a massive sick week.  We took turns getting sick, sometimes being sick at the same time for days with a nasty, nasty cold!  We got things done here and there... piano, reading, engineering, science, portuguese, coding, art, math.... but it was very inconsistent and sparce.  I had to eventually just call it a sick week, and not do a full-on report.  We didn't have enough to write about each subject in depth.

Keira... practiced piano, and performed a piano and violin piece at a Christmas party.  She did art, started memorizing the Declaration of Independence, and read a lot from "Being George Washignton".  She participated in a reenactment of events during the Revolutionary War with peers from her Scholar class on Wednesday at co-op.  She also watched an episode of Mythbusters, learning about implosions, watched shows in Portuguese, and played math games.

Garrett... also practiced his piano most days, and did many, many lessons of coding.  You could say it was a "coding" week for Garrett, because he spent so many hours working on a customized coding program.  He also read from his American History book, discussed it at his co-op group, and learned about the Marque de Lafayette.  He also played math games with his siblings, did math out of Mathemagic and Life of Fred.  For Portuguese he watched shows in Portuguese and did lessons on Mango.com.  At the beginning of the week we had a read-a-thon and read for about 4 hours.  He read all sorts of books that day.  Poetry, graphic novels, history, and listened to a read aloud.

Libby... was the most sick this week.  She practiced the piano here and there, and played math games.  She read a lot of books on our read-a-thon day, just like her siblings.  She read a lot of poetry, she read from Felicity, listened to the read aloud, and read lots of picture books.  At our co-op she discussed the chapter read from Felicity, and learned about spies during the Revolutionary War, and played a game as a spy, decoding messages.  We went to the library before co-op this week and she got a lot of books about India.  She read a lot from them and presented a little about what she read to her co-op class.  She also returned an email from her penpal in the Philippines, and she performed in a choir.

William... wasn't sick this week, but mom was, so it was harder for him to accomplish much without a good teacher.  He read a lot during our read-a-thon.  Lots of picture books, and listening to a read aloud of Cheaper By the Dozen.  He also did lessons from Reading Eggs, and Math Seeds.  He played games with his siblings that were math-related, as well.  He finished his Kiwi Crate about Mirrors this week, finishing up with a trick box using mirrors.  He got a new Kiwi Crate in the mail this week, so he got that out and learned about capillary action in trees, and constructed a tree out of wood pieces (a tree out of a tree, if you will...).  He also watched Mythbusters and learned about implosions.

So, that about sums up our week.  Lots of stuff going on, but it was pretty random, self-learning days.  Here are some random pictures to go along with our random week.  :)

Piles of books inspired hours of reading!

Programming through Tynker.com!

Our spy crew at co-op.  They worked in pairs to decode messages on a scavenger hunt,
and find the hidden weapons "hidden by the Red Coats".

Presenting things they were curious about during the week and learned about.

William's trick box that he made with mirrors inside. He can put something in the top and it looks like it disappears.

Keira, practicing the piano.

Garrett, spending some time with Calvin & Hobbes.

Garrett and Mom at a Christmas party.

Keira, performing with her violin.

Libby performed in a choir this week, and then performed in this trio during the Christmas party.
