Learning Log #30 (March 9th - 13th)

KEIRA
Math - Keira's math lessons came from Life of Fred this week.  She learned some algebra concepts from the book, and practiced the concepts on the following days with worksheets.
ELA - She read from the Dragon Slippers books, & from a pamphlet she was assigned in her Scholar class at co-op, called The Law.  She also spent time every day doing Constitution Journaling, and one day this week she spent time working on creative writing.
Science - Given the circumstances happening this week we played the Pandemic game, and watch covid-19 educational videos from YouTube to understand pandemics a little better, and this particular virus.
Portuguese - We had more reviews of the words microwave, toaster, and other kitchen words.
Music - She spent every day practicing the piano and violin, and also had lessons from both the piano and violin teacher at some point during the week.

GARRETT
Math - Garrett did several lessons from Life of Fred this week.  He's making good progress, and enjoying it.
ELA - He read from Phantom Tollbooth nearly every day, and did a few lessons from The Good & The Beautiful that focused on reading comprehension.  The day of co-op Garrett wrote an article about The Boston Masacre for a newspaper project they're working on.
Science - Given the circumstances happening this week we played the Pandemic game, and watch covid-19 educational videos from YouTube to understand pandemics a little better, and this particular virus.
Tech - Garrett did a Tynker programming lesson or two this week.  Not as many this week, but still loving it.
Music - He's still practicing the piano every day, and finally passed off the song he's been working on for weeks.

They both wanted to read the book at the same time, so this is their solution.  hahaha

LIBBY
Math - This week Libby read The Multiplying Menace, learned a bit about times tables, & did a Life of Fred lesson.
ELA - She did a few typing lessons this week, read and listened from Reading Rainbow, and read Rainbow Fairies books.  She also continued to write the newspaper ad for the newspaper project they're working on at co-op.
Social Studies - We set to work on memorizing the states this week, by learning a fun song.  We got through about 15 of them, and will continue to work on them next week.
Portuguese - We had more reviews of the words microwave, toaster, and other kitchen words.
Music - Libby is making slow and steady progress on a song she's learning on the piano.  Some days she's too frustrated by it, and some days she enjoys it.

WILLIAM
Math - For math this week we did a lot of reading from picture books.  We read Anno's Mysterious Multiplying Jar, we learned a bit about times tables, and read the Math Curse together.
ELA - Will finished reading the Level 1 books from The Good & The Beautiful Level last week, so this week he started on the Level 2 Books.  He also practiced his handwriting.
Social Studies - We set to work on memorizing the states this week, by learning a fun song.  We got through about 15 of them, and will continue to work on them next week.
Tech - We're burning out on this Tech subject; at least with lessons.  On his own he built lots with Legos, Keva Planks, Magformers, and Blocks
Portuguese - We had more reviews of the words microwave, toaster, and other kitchen words.

FAMILY
Things got more and more crazy as the week went on.  On Thursday, March 12th, the governor asked people not to meet in groups larger than 100 people.  Lots of conventions, sporting events, and even church was cancelled!  Then on Friday, March 13th, public school got cancelled!  Life just got totally different for EVERYONE!  Soo... we kind of took Friday to decompress a bit.  We played the game Pandemic (and won!), and then went on a nature walk around the Benson Marina with Dad (who is now working from home).

We have been working on tearing out our tile to put down laminate wood floors, so we continued to work on that over the weekend, as a family.

On Sunday, March 15th, we had our first experience as a family having church at home.  It was a special time together.  Keira played the opening hymn on the piano, I played the sacrament hymn on the piano, and dad played the closing hymn on the guitar.  We watched Book of Mormon videos and had a lesson and activity about this week's Come Follow Me material.  We talked about "looking beyond the mark", and played a bean bag toss game to illustrate the point.
