Learning Log #30 (Apr 9th - 13th)

This was an eventful week!  Wednesday was Keira's 12th birthday!!!  :D  We partied during the day as a family, and on Friday night she had a friend party.  It's always fun to celebrate a birthday!  :)
Birthday breakfast of pancakes, bacon, raspberries, and OJ, as requested.
Birthday dinner at a Chinese restaurant, as requested.
She spent a good chunk of the day tying a quilt that Libby gave her.

At her birthday party with friends.

She requested one crazy cake!  With Richard's help we were able to figure it out!

When we weren't celebrating Keira's birthday, here's what we did for school:

For Geography this week each kid read from their library books, and watched documentaries about the country they are studying. They learned more about the overall physical, political, and mathematical Geography of their country, and then the culture of the people.  Everything from celebrations, to food, to clothes, to every day life, and unique characteristics of the people in that country.

Garrett, reading about Japan.

Garrett's dream come true!  In Japan there is a hotel run by robots.
He has now decided that he is going to live in Japan when he grows up.

Keira, taking a geography quiz about China's physical geography.

Libby, making a Mango Lassi, after reading about some foods that come from India.

Mmm! Success!

Math
KEIRA - After refreshing her memory on some times tables that she had forgotten, Keira got back to work on factoring.  She found that factoring was much easier once she had her times tables down solid.
GARRETT worked on story problems and direct operation problems for times tables using manipulatives, and his memory.
LIBBYspent the week working on counting money.  ABCya's Money Bingo really helped her practice adding different coins and dollars in a fun way.

WILLIAM did many lessons a day on Math Seeds.  He just loves that program!  :)

ELA (English Language Arts)
KEIRA continued reading Charlie and the Glass Elevator this week, read from her books about China, and did daily scripture study from Alma.
GARRETT read from Jedi Academy, and Calvin and Hobbes this week, read about Japan, and had daily scripture study from Alma.
LIBBY read a book about Joan of Arc this week, read about India from her library books, and listened to Magic Treehouse books before bed, and to scripture stories from the Old Testament in the mornings.
WILLIAM is hard at work reading through his Little Reader books.  He's got about 8 more to go before he has read through all 70 of them and earns a Lego set!  :o

Piano
The kids keep making wonderful progress in piano.  Here are some videos of Keira and Libby practicing a bit of each of their songs.  I'll have to catch Garrett next week.
