Learning Log #10 (Oct 22nd - 26th)

Here's what our educational journey looked like this week:

WILLIAM
Math: Will enjoyed learning about base ten numbers up to the thousands this week.  We have some neat cards that help demonstrate the concept that helped teach him that, and then he used those cards while playing Base Ten Bingo on the computer to further understand the ideas.
ELA: He did several lessons on Reading Eggs this week, and also did some lessons from The Good and The Beautiful to learn more words that use the "sh", "th", and the "ch" sounds.
ASL: We used sign language to help us learn a poem this week.  We learned words such as "good", "work", "know", "rich", and "poor".  Using signs really helps memorize!
LEGO Architecture: This was imagination week.  Using LEGOS he already has, William combined many different pieces and created many new inventions to go along with the world he has been creating.  One of the days, he actually put together his very first stop motion video using one of his creations.
Science: In co-op this week they learned all about bees. This in addition to what we learned about bones as a family.

LIBBY
Math: Libby continued to read out of her Life of Fred math book this week.  She also practiced using money.
Piano: Libby's starting to get the hang of learning the notes on the piano.  She was started to learn "Spoonful of Sugar" and continues to learn the notes on the Treble Clef.
ELA: In her The Good and The Beautiful lesson this week she learned a bit about poetry.  This got her on a kick and spent a good amount of time writing poems.  She also read from her Molly book, and at co-op they discussed the chapter.  At this point in the story the characters make a traditional coffee cake from the 40s, so that's what they did for their activity at co-op this week.
Science: She shared a report she did about Tarantulas in her "I Wonder" class.  That was what she was curious about this week.  That, in addition to our lesson as a family about the bones of the body.

GARRETT
Math: Garrett continued to learn about division this week, and practice his facts.
ELA: He wrote in his journal a lot this week.  He also read from Wayside Stories.
LEGO Architecture: Garrett explored the idea of building decks on buildings.  He tried doing it to structures that were already built, and then the idea of building the decks onto the buildings from the beginning.
Piano: Garrett finished learning the song he's been working on, but is now taking that same song and learning how to add in the forte and pianissimo to the arrangement.
Science: In his co-op class Garrett learned about famous world structures and recreated them using LEGOS.  This in addition to the lesson we did as a family about bones.

KEIRA
Math: Keira's still exploring the concept of fraction equivalents.  She's figuring it out with her Math Inspirations book and Fraction Equivalant BINGO.
ELA: She's reading The Phantom Tollbooth for her co-op now.  She also did some creative writing assignments this week.
Ent: Using the things she learned from her first week on her sewing machine, Keira made a unique pillow on her own.  Each week as she learns more about sewing she is also watching DIY videos and exploring Pinterest to come up with ideas for what she would eventually like to do as a business with this class.
Piano: She continues to make progress on Once Upon a Dream, and working on the left hand.  She's enjoying learning.
Violin: This week she's expressing some frustration with violin.  It's harder to make sound good than the piano, so she isn't enjoying the practice as much.  She says she enjoys the violin still, but it frustrated at the imperfection.

For our Science lesson this week we learned more about the anatomy and physiology of the bone itself.  We had a large femur bone of a cow from the butcher that was cut in half that we were able to handle and reference as we learned what bones are made of, and what their role is in our body, besides giving us structure.  After our lesson we made pretzels.  They were supposed to be bone shaped, but everyone preferred to make the traditional shape, since we haven't done that before.
