Learning Log #8 (Oct 8th - 12th)

On to another week of school!

We continued to meet each morning to share scriptures from our personal scripture studies, and continue to memorize our "Character" poem.

For Science this week we started our Anatomy and Physiology unit.  We did an intro lesson to learn what those words mean, and what the systems of the body are that we'll be learning this year.

At co-op Keira's class discussed physics, and did an egg drop experiment.  Keira's eggs were successfully safe!

Libby's class discussed the next chapter in their Molly book, and made hula skirts (something that was done in that part of the book).

Garrett's class discussed the chapter from the book they're reading (The Cay).  For the second hour, both Garrett and Libby's class combined to hear from a special guest couple, who came in and told about what it was like growing up in the 40s.

On their own, here's what each kid did:

KEIRA
Math: Keira moved on to fraction equivalents this week.  She did some lessons about that, and then practiced what she learned on a fraction app we have.
ELA: Keira read from her Pie book this week, practiced handwriting, and then rounded off the week sick.
Piano: As always, she practiced and had lessons for Piano.  She's making wonderful progress!
Violin: She had group lessons again this week, and practiced her violin on the days that she wasn't sick.
Ent: She didn't have lessons this week for her entrepreneur class, so she spent her week doing homework.  She brainstormed ideas, put ideas on Pinterest, and made some felt play food to practice.  She said it may be something she'd want to perfect and sell later on.

GARRETT
Math: Garrett tested his knowledge of what he knows of division so far by teaching me, and then coming up with a hypothesis on division.  On other days he practiced his division on an app we have on the ipad.
ELA: He read from Wayside Stories this week, as well as doing handwriting worksheets, typing lessons, and creative writing.
Piano: Garrett practiced piano every day and had lessons this week.  He's making amazing progress!
LEGO Architecture: It was time to take apart his seasonal LEGO set and change it into an Autumn set.  There were some different aspects of the new architecture that he noted as he made the changes.

LIBBY
Math: Libby started Life of Fred books for math this week.  I read to both her and William and they did 3 chapters of lessons.  On other days she practiced adding up money on the Money Bingo game on abcya.com.
ELA: This week Libby read from her Molly book, did typing lessons, and then caught the illness that Keira had and sat the rest of the week out.
Photography: We didn't get to photography this week, since she got sick before her lessons.
Piano: She wasn't sick for piano lessons this week, but she did miss some days of practicing. She's slowly getting into the sight-reading aspect of piano.  It's not her favorite, but she's ready for it.

WILLIAM
Math: Will was excited to sit in and listen to the Life of Fred chapters I read to Libby this week  I included him on the lessons, and he he did pretty well. On other days he practiced telling time on abcya.com games.

ELA: For ELA he did a worksheet out of his Good and the Beautiful workbook on the "sh", "th" and "ch" sounds. He also read a book that incorporated those sounds as a follow up, and he did a typing lesson.
LEGO Architecture: Will finished his LEGO hotel this week, and showed me all the ways that made it a hotel and not a house. We had to make sure some of the pieces were pushed together enough when parts fell off, but it all worked out.

On Friday the kids went to American West Heritage Center and had a special educational tour of the center and learning what it was like in the 1800s in Utah.  The tour included making their own candles, chopping wood, pulling handcarts, weaving on a loom, learning about what school was like, touring models of homes from that time, and finally playing games that people used to play back then.

It wiped some children right out...
