Learning Log #35 (Apr 15th - 19th)

Two weeks ago we stayed in a hotel with pretty great views of the elevators in action, which spurred questions for our Science lesson this week.  We explored YouTube videos and Googled questions to figure just how elevators work.  Simple machines and newer technology were the subjects that answered those questions.

We like to pick scriptures and poems to memorize as a family.  Sometimes it takes us a week, and they pass it off individually, and sometimes it takes longer.  For the last week we have been working on this poem, called "Builder".  It will probably only take us another week to complete it. I think it's William's favorite thing that we've memorized for far.  ;)

We are starting a new unit of History now, picking up where we last left off; in the 1500's.  We will be learning about the key figures in history that played a part in the discovery in America, which will lead us into our unit on the Revolutionary War next fall.  This week, to kick it off, we learned about vikings, and specifically Leif Erikson. After the lesson some of the kids did an art lesson to learn how to draw a viking, learned how to write their names in the Rune Alphabet, and a viking maze.

On another day we learned about Marco Polo and his adventures. That lesson prompted some animal studies, as we learned about animals he was seeing for the first time and describing to people in Europe who had never heard of some of these animals.

KEIRA
Math: Keira has been doing a study of the great mathematicians in history.  She continued this week, reading about Thales, and Fibonacci, from Mathematicians Are People, Too, and The Life of Fibonacci. She also played some games to strengthen her ability to find patterns.
ELA: She has finished reading some hard books lately, so she's picked up some Beverly Cleary books to read for fun.  Mostly the Ramona books.  She also practiced typing and handwriting this week, in addition to writing some papers for her co-op class on antibiotics, and wrote a paper about Chimpanzees after our Marco Polo lesson.
Entrepreneur: She finished making some gifts for her cousins this week (the cute little stuffed animals pictured below) and decided that's what she's going to make and try to sell.
Violin: She has been practicing the same songs for awhile now, and making slow and steady progress on them.  She went to lessons again this week, and reported that she likes going to lessons, because she gets help on parts of the violin that she can't do on her own at home.
Piano: We are getting ready for a recital coming up here in a few weeks, and so she has been polishing the Sonata that she's been working on for months.  It's starting to really come together.

GARRETT
Math: Garrett's been working on reading through a list of math literature, starting with simple picture books, and quickly building up to harder ones.  This week he read Math Curse, and worked through all the problems presented in that book.  It took quite some time to try and figure out each one. Another book he worked through this week was Sir Cumference and the Vikings Map.  He learned more about coordinates and how globes and maps work using coordinates.  We found our home using coordinates on Google Maps.  He also practiced his pattern-finding abilities through games.
ELA: He was able to do both math and ELA this week combined with all the reading he did for math.  He also made time to read from Harry Potter.  He's just starting it, for the first time.  He also did a journal entry and did a lesson on verbs, from The Good and The Beautiful. He also wrote a paper about Rhinos, after our Marco Polo lesson.
LEGO: We checked out a book from the library about making inventions from LEGOs this week, and played around wtih some things from that book, as well as creating his own inventions using LEGO bricks.
Piano: Garrett is also preparing for an upcoming piano recital, so he's been working hard on the songs he's been learning the last few months, trying to perfect them.  He also started another song, learning more about chords.

LIBBY
Math: Libby learned about Prime Numbers this week, using Life of Fred.  We read several chapters from that book this week.  She also read through a picture/activity book called Math Appeal, and worked out the problems from that.  That took her several days to get through.  It taught her good tricks on grouping things together for easier adding and problem solving.
ELA: She has been reading Goddess Girls lately, and really enjoying that first book.  She also typed journal entries in the computer, utilizing both journal writing, and typing skills. She also read about and filled out a worksheet about bats, after our Marco Polo history lesson.
Photography: Spring has inspired lots of nature photography this week. Up close, landscape, and action shots of our animals.
Piano: Libby is also preparing for the recital coming up.  She has two songs she will be performing.  One, she made up, and another one she's learning to play by ear; Do Re Mi. She's working on getting them performance-worthy.

This is a picture from our co-op this week.
We learned about the Thousand Cranes story from WW2, and learned
how to make origami cranes.  Libby is on the far right on the back row.

WILLIAM
Math: William also did several chapters from Life of Fred this week, and learned a bit about the basics of prime numbers.  On other days he did lessons from Math Seeds.
ELA: Will did reading lessons from our McGuffy Reader, did lessons from Reading Eggs, and practiced handwriting this week.  He also chose to learn about wolves, and filled out a worksheet about wolves, after our Marco Polo history lesson.
LEGO: William definitely shows a tendency to build vehicles each week out of LEGOs.  He made several rockets, cars, and boats this week, in addition to fixing up his monstrous BatMobile, that he got last fall.  He thinks through details, and explains why it works the way it does.
ASL: Signing Time provided another lesson for Will this week.  This week it was about making friends.  He's not the biggest fan of this show, since it is more geared towards toddlers, but he likes it better than the adult videos.
