Learning Log #31 (April 17th - 21st)

Our Science lessons continued this week about flowers.  We did another Mystery Science lesson, this time about Natural Selection; why some apples are red and some are green.  After we watched the video, we did an experiment.  I cut up four different types of apples, and we did a taste test on which apples we liked best, writing our results down.  Keira and Libby preferred the Fuji, Garrett preferred the Red Delicious, and William preferred the Golden Delicious.  Here they are pointing to their favorites:

 Keira did another lesson in Snap Circuits, this time it was building a circuit using solar power!  Cool!

Reading:
KEIRA read from Shel Silverstein this week, as well as an original Sleeping Beauty tale from Grimm's Fairy Tales.  She also did a lesson from Reading Eggspress.

GARRETT read from Jedi Academy, and read a few Usborne books from our reading book set.

LIBBY also read from our Usborne book set, and did some lessons from Reading Eggs.

In addition to this we did a game as a group this week.  Using Story Cubes we created a story together.  Each person took turns rolling the story dice, and making up a part of the story based on the picture that the dice landed on, until we had created a complete story.  I wrote it down on the white board as we went and guided them in creating a story with character development, a conflict, a resolution, and a wrap up. When we were done we read it again out loud, and then I assigned them to draw their favorite part of the story.  It was a fun activity, that everyone seemed to enjoy.

William's favorite part of the story was when a helicopter came down with a magnet and moved the bee's house.

Keira drew a picture of the tree in the story... and added other things to her picture that weren't in the story.  

Math:
KEIRA did chapters from Life of Fred, played Mastermind with Garrett, and played Qwirkle with the family for math this week.
GARRETT did a chapter from Life of Fred, a lesson from Math Seeds, played Mastermind with Keira, and played Qwirkle with the family for math this week.
LIBBY also did chapters from Life of Fred and Math Seeds, as well as playing Qwirkle with the family.

A lot of other random things were done this week.  In their spare time...

LIBBY, KEIRA, AND GARRETT did art lessons by using Art Hub for Kids on YouTube...

KEIRA practiced the piano...
and we watched Percy Jackson together as a family since we've been learning about Greek History.  Yes, yes, that's quite the stretch, I know!  Since it centers around the Greek Gods and some of their legends we took it as an opportunity to watch it and pause the movie to point out aspects of the Greek Mythology we've discussed and why people used to believe in these myths.  ;)
