Learning Log #7 (Sept 30th - Oct 4th)

KEIRA
Math- Keira alternated between reading from Mathemagic and learning about how to use an abacus and the history of numbers, and doing review sheets.  Those sheets are going to take us some time to get through.
ELA- This week Keira did a typing lesson, a grammar from the The Good & The Beautiful, and wrote an opinion paper for her Scholar class she takes at our co-op.  She also read from John Adams every day.
Science- Keira worked on a Eureka crate this week for science.  This month's crate was a soap dispenser, with a working motor.  It turned out great.
Tech- For her US History Minecraft class this week, she read about Columbus' journeys, and then started making a replica of the Nina ship in Minecraft, incorporating the redstone project they taught her this week.
Music- Keira's making great progress in her songs.  She had a lesson and keeps getting better and better each week.

GARRETT
Math- Garrett's math this week was a combination of reading from Mathemagic, and doing review sheets.
ELA- For ELA studies this week he read from American History Stories, and Willy Wanka.  Plus, he did a typing lesson, and a grammar lesson from The Good & The Beautiful.
Tech- Garrett's still learning how to code and doing well.  He did a few more lessons from Tynker.com to learn more.
Music- He had another piano lesson this week, and diligently practiced the other days, making good progress.

LIBBY
Math- Libby read a few books for math this week, and used those books to figure out math concepts.  She read "A Remainder of One", and "Sir Cumference" books.
ELA- This week Libby's studies included using adjectives in her creative writing book, and doing a typing lesson.
Social Studies- Libby kept her study of China going by learning about pandas, the Forbidden Palace, and an ancient game that she got to try out.
Tech- For her US History Minecraft class this week she finished her Indian house, learned how to do some redstone tricks, and practiced doing that in her house.
Music- she's made a lot of progress in her piano pieces this week.  She's almost got a few passed off, and so she started a new piece by ear.  She'll be learning A Whole New World by ear this week.

On a side note, it was Libby's birthday on Monday, so she got the day off.  Here are some pictures of things she worked on this week, plus pictures of her on her birthday.

WILLIAM
Math- This week for math we used "Math For All Seasons", and "Math-terpieces" to learn math tricks and solve problems. We also learned just how big the numbers one million, one billion, and one trillion are with the book, "How Much is a Million?".
ELA- For ELA William did a lesson from Reading Eggs, read a bunch of Usborne books, and did a grammar lesson from The Good & The Beautiful.
Social Studies- We kept working on our Atlas Crate about Peru. We learned more about Peru from the book that came with the crate, and then made a hat for his Alpaca that he had made last week.
Tech- Will did A LOT of engineering this week!  He made a mechanical sweeper from his Kiwi Crate, and made a bunch of different kinds of bridges with our Knex building kit.
Portuguese- Will reviewed flashcards from previous lessons, and watched Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs to strengthen his ear, hearing the language used a lot.
